A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in national works. They were built at an accelerated pace, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital initiatives.
