Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes made those words in multiple conversations following his team's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

However, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
